July 4, 1982, Ron Troup and I got up very early and headed out to Rodgers Dry Lake at Edwards Air Force Base to watch the landing of the Columbia (STS-4). We were in the company of almost a half million people plus another 45,000 on the other side of the lake. President Ronald Reagan and Nancy were also on hand to greet the astronauts. This was the fourth orbital test flight. Commander Thomas K. Mattingly and pilot Henry Hartsfield Jr.
All of these photos were taken by me except the aerial photo of the cars parked by spectators and the photo of the touchdown. We had the red Ford station wagon back then. If you can spot it, let me know!
